2 more Cong workers shot at

Imphal, March 17: Two more block level Congress workers were shot at to injure at the legs by suspected militants Tuesday at around noon at Sambei village under Heingang police station of Imphal east even as Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh has assured its workers that adequate security measures to check intimidation by arm groups.The Chief Minister has given the assurance to its workers during a meeting of the party held here at Congress Bhavan yesterday evening in which Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaikhangam also attended.

Police report said the two block level Congress workers name Khangembam Muhindro (75) and Laiphrakpam Ibungcha (53), both hailing from Khundrakpam Mayai Leikai were shot at by the suspected KCP(MC) militants at the legs at around noon today at Sambei village after they were abducted.


Muhindro who sustained bullet injury at left leg is the president of the Khundrakpam Kendra Development Committee which was formed under the initiative of the circle MLA Th Lokeshwor, a Congress MLA in the state Assembly.

While, Ibungcha shot at to injure at his right leg was an agent of SK oil of the locality apart from an active worker of the local Congress committee and a closed associate of Muhindro. Both have been evacuated at RIMS hospital, Imphal. Their conditions were stated to be stabled and out of danger.

Both of them were abducted by the unidentified gunmen yesterday evening at around 6 pm from their respective home, according to the families. Some unidentified intruded into their respective houses and taken away them. They did not disclose their names or group they belong to despite strong insistence, family members said.

When they were taken away yesterday evening, womenfolk of the locality gathered at a public ground and discussed on how to react to the abduction of the two Congress workers. Police commandos also arrived after residents informed on the abduction.

But a phone call received by one of the daughters of Ibungcha from the abductors reportedly assured not to gather and remain calm as they would freed the two after having talk on some matter, the womenfolk dispersed themselves one by one.

Police commandos also left the place, locals said. The shooting to injure of Congress workers occurred a day after the Chief Minister, O Ibobi Singh told some reporters here yesterday evening that he has directed state police and other security establishments to take up adequate measures to check intimidations to the Congress workers by militants.
He also said that the acts of causing injury and intimidating Congress political workers by the militants when electioneering for the Lok Sabha elections is gaining momentum would not be able to affect the party position in the ensuing elections.

Chief Minister O Ibobi held a closed door meeting with party leaders at Congress Bhavan yesterday in which MPCC chief Gaikhangam, Ministers, MLAs, party office bearers and functionaries of the party’s frontal organisations and cells also took part. The State Government has also taken up necessary measures to check such evil designs, he added.
Even though the chief minister refused to disclose details of the meeting, the meeting chalked out party’s strategy for the Lok Sabha elections.

Mention may be made that a senior district level president of Congress party in Bishnupur district survived an attempt on his life on March 13 even as resident of the president of the youth wing of the same party was fired upon by suspected militants three days later on match 15.
