IMPHAL, May 13(IFP) : A division bench of the Guwahati High Court (Imphal Bench) comprising of Justice Maibam BK Singh and Justice Mutum BK Singh has today served a show cause notice to the DGP and IGP (law and order) of Manipur Police Department to follow the court’s directives and furnish explanations over their failure to produce the presidents of the ANSAM and ATSUM before the court in connection with the present economic blockade along the national highways.
It may be mentioned that a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by advocate Hemchandra of Wangkhei on May 2 this month in connection with the economic blockade called by the Naga bodies in the state resulting in great sufferings for the common people over the shortage of daily essential commodities, which is believed to be a gross violation of the right to life.
The division bench had earlier ordered the DGP and IGP (law and order) of Manipur Police Department on May 5 to produce Thomas Taishya, president ATSUM and David Choro, president ANSAM before the court today i.e. May 13. However, the duo were not produced before the court today and subsequently the bench again ordered the presidents of ANSAM and ATSUM to appear before the court on May 20. It also directed the DGP and IGP (L&O) to submit their explanations for failure to produce them before the court today and also asked why contempt or proceedings should not be initiated against them for non compliance of the said direction of the competent court.
