Imphal, February 25: Extending their solidarity to Irom Sharmila Devi, Students’ Union of Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai and a social activist from Jammu and Kashmir are observing three days fast since Wednesday. This was informed by Sunil Jha ,member of the Students' Union of Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. He also informed that the union is constituted with students across the country and the three-day fast was started since Wednesday which would be continued till Friday. It was staged outside the main campus of Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, added Sunil Jha.
Sunil Jha while stating that the students’ union wanted to convey that Sharmila is not alone in her struggle. He revealed that the students’ would organize a mass awareness amongst the students on the issue that Sharmila has been struggling for.
Sajjad Hussain,member of National Alliance of People’s Movement (NAPM), Jammu and Kashmir who is currently in Imphal informed that a social activist in Jammu and Kashmir has also joined the three-day fast in support of Sharmila Devi.
Meanwhile, members of National Alliance of People’s Movement (NAPM), Asha Parivar and many other NGOs arrived in Imphal on Tuesday to visit Sharmila Devi. Faisal Khan of Asha Parivar and (NAPM), Arvind Murty of NAPM (Uttar Pradesh) MH Gandhi of Asha Parivar (Gujarat) and Sajjad Hussain of NAPM (Jammu and Kashmir) has joined the relay hunger strike being staged at PDA complex, Porompat under the aegis of Sharmila Kanba Lup. The three-day hunger strike was started on Wednesday.
It is worth mentioning that Sharmila Devi is on fast since November 2000 after 10 civilians were being massacred by the security forces at Malom, Imphal. She has been demanding the repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA-1958) since then.
