Cong all set to form Govt in Meghalaya

Shillong | May 12: The nearly two months of President’s rule in Meghalaya will come to an end on Wednesday after the Congress and the United Democratic Party (UDP) decided to work together to form a 'stable government' in the state. "President’s rule in Meghalaya will be revoked through the Presidential communiqué on Wednesday and I have already invited the Congress to form the government", stated Meghalaya Governor Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary at a press conference held in Shillong today.
Mooshahary said today that he has invited the Congress to form the government after the United Democratic Party (UDP) with 9 MLAs pledged its support to the Congress party which already has 26 legislators and two other independent MLAs supporting its proposed formation of the government. The Governor's decision came after a series of telephonic and verbal deliberations between the UDP and the Congress that culminated in Shillong and New Delhi today.

Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader D.D Lapang and the All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary L Feiloro met the Governor on Tuesday morning to stake claim in forming the government and this was followed by the UDP leaders–Dr Donkupar Roy, J.D Rymbai and J.A Lyngdoh similar visit to the Raj Bhavan to officially announce their extension of the party support to Congress led Government. The Congress and the UDP also submitted the letter of understanding entered by the two parties in order to provide a stable government.
Mooshahary while announcing that he was convinced with the number of MLAs claimed by the Congress and the UDP's subsequent extension of support to provide a stable government to the state said, “The Congress led Government to be headed by D D Lapang will be sworn in at 11:30 on Wednesday morning”.

The Congress with 26 members have also submitted the names of 9 UDP legislators along with the names of two independent MLAs in Donkupar Massar and Abdul T Mondal. The present number that is 37 is without the four disqualified MLAs who are still waging a legal battle against the Speaker’s ruling. Meanwhile, the Governor will give the Congress led government 15 days time to prove its strength on the floor of the house.
